Most atheists do not proclaim to "know" anything..... they simply refuse to believe (or "know") something to which there is no proof.
Any rational person would be as skeptical. In court they say innocent until proven guilty..... with god figures it should be non-existant until proven to be existent. Not the other way around because there is no way to prove something DOES NOT exist.
I am an atheist, and i do not claim to "know" anything. I don't KNOW god doesn't exist..... i just do not believe there is a god because there is no evidence to support it.
If anything, i've seen more christians claim to have this special knowledge on all of the mysteries of the world.
If anyone is smug it's those christians who lay these claims..... and I would say that you seem awfully smug yourself. What belief system do you fall under?

I'm going to sound like an ***, but I've got to say the Judeo-Christian-Muslims faith.
Sure scientists can be very arrogant, but any scientist worth his salt (did I actually just use that expression!?) will acknowledge new findings in their field and admit to previous misunderstandings.
Atheists...are usually content just keeping to themselves. You don't often see them out on street corners trying to "preach" to people that believe.
I'm not saying THIS IS HOW IT IS! I'm just saying, from where I live I see more smugness displayed by the religious types than the non-religious types.

The smuggest would be the ones who can have the Federal Government back them in a agenda.
Since science is the only one taught, BY LAW, I would say that that is where the most smugness would be.
John C is the proof.

Atheists don't 'claim' to know anything about god or gods. That is the reason for being an Atheist. Scientists use reasoning and evidence to support their claims. Guess where that leaves the Judeo-Christian-Muslim believers?

It's a tie between Christians and Muslims - ignorance tranformed into a certainty that can only be experienced by the truly deluded

I dont think its a good idea to imply that all people of either group are smug. Are there individuals who have a high degree of smugness? Hell, yes, but dont judge everyone.

I think that atheists are, because they know that science and common sense backs them up. Other religions don't have anything like that to prove that they're right, except for their own holy texts, which are unreliable and untrustworthy.

I think that is a human condition regardless of religion. I've seen it strong on all sides so I don't think anyone could possibly answer that beyond a personal opinion.
