A lot of times when I surf the net (Youtube), I find a lot of videos featuring people (oftentimes children) reciting the Qu'ran. Also, I recently learned that according to Islamic Tradition, when the Muslim Prophet Muhammad first received Islam from the Angel Gabriel, the first thing the angel told him was: Recite! So, from that, I am assuming that reciting the Qu'ran is a very important thing to do in Islam. Why is it so important to you to recite the Qu'ran? Is it that important?

Yes, it is very important.

Frequent recitation keeps the message of the Qur'an fresh in our minds, and is useful for reciting during Salaah (prayer).

Besides that, the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said we receive a reward for each letter we recite.

I'm not Muslim but it's also very important in the Jewish tradition to read from the Torah aloud (and I'd imagine it's the same in some Christian traditions as well.)

First, I'm told that the language of the Qu'ran is beautiful if you speak Arabic. Certainly the method of recitation makes it beautiful, just as the traditional Jewish cantillation of the Torah is beautiful. Such recitations also give the hearer an opportunity to reflect on the words in a communal setting.

Yes, it is, my husband's mother believes that praying out loud 5 times a day with recitations from the Qu'ran is mandated by Allah as was told to Muhammad (May peace be upon him) by the angel Gabriel. As do all the Muslims I know.

Recitation is important but it does not only mean reading aloud. The Arabic word for recitation has a wider meaning of "to follow". It means that to read and understand Quran is very important. It is a book of guidelines before it is anything else. So to read it, understand it, follow it and help others in understanding is of paramount importance in Islam. One cannot live in a country without knowing the rules there. Similarly, Quran is our book of rules and guidelines for this life and hence to be referred to and read and understood.

Reading alound is also preferred because the surrounding people can also hear it and can benefit from it.

The tradition of recitation could be said to have come from the ancient oral traditions of religions such as Judaism.

Before the first muslims had paper to write on they memorized entire chunks of the Quran in order to maintain the original "message".

Besides, recitation is intgeral to muslim form of prayer, which is more of a ritual than the act of "real" prayer, which I would call asking for God's help (this is done after "salat" which muslims often translate as prayer).

In this way muslim "salat" is a form of brain-washing, programming if you prefer, where the "message" of the Quran is repeated to its adherents at least five times a day.

Ok, I am not a Muslim, but, this is what I think.

Yes it is important. It is important for them to know what their religion teaches them. Just the same way, Christians may read the bible or go to church, and Hindus go to the temple or read their religious texts, it is important for a Muslim who believes to recite the Qu'ran.

The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) has said:

“The one who recites the Qur’an and the one who listens to it have an equal share in the reward.”

“The best of those amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and then teaches it to others.”

“These hearts rust just as iron rusts; and indeed they are polished through the recitation of the Qur’an.”

"I, the book of Allah and my progeny will be the first to come to the Almighty, the Omnipotent (on the Day of Judgement); then my Ummah will come after us. Then I will ask: "What did you do with the Book of Allah and my Ahlul-Bait?"

Imam Ali (as) has said:

"Recite the Quran and seek assistance from it, for surely Allah, the Most High, will not punish one who has memorized the Quran (and has it in one's heart).

Yes. Reciting the Holy Al-Qur’an is very important. By reciting it, you learn to properly master the language and the pronunciations, and learning the different suras and their meanings in the Qur’an. Recitation of the Qur’an is very beautiful, and you should listen to it some day, Insha-ALLAH. It’s a very beautiful scene.
