You could go patriotic with red and white; you could go preppy with lime green and yellow; you could go conventional with white and other shades of blue.
Psychedelic colors might blend well (hot pink, orange, purple, lime and white).
With a hardwood floor you also could go with clay and yellow. I like the idea of a navy couch myself, but my cats would love it even better! :-)
Gee, I think I just said everything goes with navy, didn't I?
I noticed the other answers referred to paint. I was talking about fabrics (drapes, throw pillows, throw rugs).

I personally like red with navy but it depends on the mood you want to create. If you want soothing and serene then stick with cream, but for pizazz use a bright orange or red or even purple or yellow. The best thing to do is ACCENT with the bright colors( pictures, candles, flowers, pillows) and keep your major pieces (walls, furniture, rugs) neutral. That way you can easily change the look. I used to have a navy blue and white kitchen that I would accent with yellow in the spring and summer and red in the winter and fall. Changed the whole feeling of the room.

Since your couch is dark, I would probably paint the walls a tan or yellow color to offset. Then you could coordinate with some bright pillows (yellow, burgundy, or emerald green would look great). I would stay away from too much brown or black accents and especially dark wall colors, because it will make your room feel small. Good luck!

A light yellow tinged, butter creamy type color would look good. Something like Cornsilk by Benjamin Moore or Man in the Moon (also by BM). The two colors lighter and darker to the two I mentioned are also very nice, depending on how light or dark you want to go.

I would go with red/burgundy. It will bring out the couch as well as the flooring.

For contrast, add yellows.
If you want to make the room warm and cozy, with little "excitement:, add sleek metallics such as silver or warm silver.
If you want to create focal point that will wow your visitors, add yellows and reds.
