Yes. If you can't trust someones word then there is little else you can trust them with.

Seriously - no. I forget what I say. But if others remind me of a promise I try to honor it in the best way I can. My code of honor is truth. It's interesting because truth is not honored as much as one thinks it would be. For example speaking the truth in my family has put me "out" more times than not. The key is being able to speak your truth without hurting others. Such as "I feel" or "I believe". Truth and compassion thus are more codes of honor that I strive towards, but being human sometimes I miss the mark.

"An honor code or honor system is a set of rules or principles governing a community based on a set of rules or ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. The use of an honor code depends on the idea that people (at least within the community) can be trusted to act honorably. Those who are in violation of the honor code can be subject to various sanctions, including expulsion from the institution."

There should be not more to say. Once you give your word no written contract should be any better. If you can not do what you said you go and tell the other person the reasons why you can not do it. The reasons must be true or your word is not worth anything.

Your code of honor is the way you handle yourself and your decisions/choices.

Your "word" is part of that. You are defined by the choices you make!

yes and if you break it, is just shows what type of person you truly are.

Yes!

People are as only as good as their word; if their word isn't worth dung then neither are they.

for most of us yes......it is our bond and we are only as good as our word.
For Bush, it is a convenience that he can manipulate or use to suit his purposes. Guess he has no honor.
