JiveMan, you know better than that! For me, music plays tricks with my brain, it runs through it like a flowing river, and stirs and tickles that mess of goo and wiring. And you?

No. Music is a driving force, and that force can be directed in positive ways or negative ways. While some music does, indeed, distract us so we learn less and lose touch with our feelings and subconsciousness, there is also music that moves us to excel. Consider how you feel when the National Anthem plays, or "God Bless America" or some other patriotic song. Think of your favorite song and how it makes you feel. Compare this to the song you find most vile, most despicable. Do you see, now, the power the music has? It can tear us down, or lift us up to heights we'd never attain without it. It CAN kill brain cells, true; but it can also inspire.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost,
But now I'm found;
Was blind, but now I see!

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
'Twas grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright, shining as the sun,
We've no less days
To sing God's praise
Than when we first believed.

Inspiring, indeed.

Music, like all human expression, is one among many tools we have to understand the world. It taps into a primal nature in us, allowing the emotions and passions to be stirred. Later, when not under the influence of it, one should analyze and understand just what happens to the mind and body when the heart beat synchs up with the mind and pulsations of the body. If you cannot see the benefit in that, then you perhaps have a strange definition of "feeling," being that all things we see and feel are valid, and important, because they are a part of us, are us.

Wrong on several counts...

I used to begin my Calculus exams by humming Bach to myself. I used his music to block out interruptions when I was studying and "thinking" the music reminded me exactly the contents of every page of the text and my notes. (For many years I was a concert 'cellist and really enjoyed the "perpetual motion" feel of many Bach pieces. Since I studied with it, I could use it to keep things in order based on what I was hearing when I learned them.)

Music is NOT noise... at least REAL music isn't, but sequences of combinations of pitch, time, timbre, tone... WHICH ILLICIT a mental or emotional response in the listener.

Leave music out of it. I cannot remember music ever being blamed for as many things as religion.

Internet is the distraction why don't you unplug now.

Music is said to come from the realm of the gods. I will now pray for your salvation.

no. music is an expession of emotions. Sure there is crap music out there, but music in general is something that can bring deep emotional responces from many people. It doesn't cause us to lose touch with our feelings. In fact i think its quite the opposite.

Good music can actually stimulate the brain and help you to learn more. That's why we have music education in schools.

Oh no....Not for me, music motivates me. It even talks about the use of music in the Bible as a praise and worship to God and even David dancing for God. I believe the music connects us...opening our hearts and minds. Praise bands at church really connect people to God. Some schools are beginning to allow the use of music into some of the classrooms...they are saying that it actually helps kids to focus easier on what they are learning.
