I would say have a very casual one at a relatives house... preferably someone with a nice big house... tell everyone to bring a dish... kind of make it like a picnic... that is very LOW BUDGET... maybe even have it the day after the wedding... so everyone won't be dressed up... I DON'T KNOW... just a suggestion.... :o)

Our reception is costing us $400. That's not too bad. We have a friend of the family that's a dj and is providing the service for only $100. SInce most people aren't that lucky to find someone like that I would suggest asking someone to play different cds all night. Cutting the dj out saves a lot of money. Then we are getting deli meat and buns so everyone can make their own sandwiches. I am making some pasta salad. Then we are having a few people in our families that we are close to help with the side dishes. All very cheap... pinwheels, potato salad, chocolate pudding, fresh fruit... Our decorations we got at Wal-Mart and a couple dollar stores. Very cute and elegant and didn't cost much. Instead of floral centerpieces, we are doing trays of dinner mints with tealight candles surrounding them. We are only getting a 2-tier cake for looks and most people don't eat the cake anyway.

We were going to have a full ceremony and dessert reception for 60 people for just under $5,000. We had the entire thing budgeted out with quotes for everything and came up $700 under budget. It would have been gorgeous and lovely. At the last minute my parents offered to foot the bill and wanted me to do something fancier, and some of the things they wanted to put more money in do make my life easier so I've agreed. But I'd have had no problem with my 5k wedding.

I would say it all depends on the time of year and the location.

I live close to the ocean so if I were on a budget I would plan an off season wedding when not to many people are down but the weather is still somewhat decent and just have a beach party or something like that.

I would plan a pig roast. Have the neighbors or friends help with salads, side dishes etc. You would be amazed at the untapped resources that are available. There are cake decorators that work out of there home. DJ's just starting their careers that will give you a great price if you give out their business cards.

Just have fun in a Field or large backyard.

Have fun it is all about friends and family celebrating your marriage, not the wedding day.

The exact wedding we have planned for this year:

1. Registrar wedding, this still cost me £450 so not always the cheaper option, but no way would I marry in a church.

2. No fancy cars, our parents are taking us, their cars are decent anyway.

3. No photographer, my future brother in law will be taking pictures, because he is good.

4. We're having a stack of cupcakes instead of a "proper" cake, it cost £33 for 50 cakes, much cheaper.

5. We're having our reception in my sister in law's home, she has a huge house and lovely garden, so why bother wasting money anywhere else.

6. Husband to be's friends are cooking us an awesome BBQ, this may sound "tacky" to some people, but as my fiance and all his friends are fine dining chefs we are not taking sad burgers and limp salad, we're talking gourmet BBQ.

7. I decided against a "traditional" wedding gown.

8. No DJ, the house we are using for the reception has sound everywhere and a fantastic sound system, so we're using a MP3 to play the music we choose.

9. We have kept flowers to the minimum, flowers for me and my one bridesmaid, button holes for the men in our families, corsages for the ladies in the family, and thank you bouquets for both mothers and my sister in law. We have not ordered flowers for the registry office or for table decorations, we've kept tables decorations to candles only.

My first wedding I really had no input in as my mom in law took over. Since that marrage ended after 23 years...I'm thinking if I ever do it again I'll be in a lacy sundress, barefoot on a beach and my husband will wear cut off jeans and be barefoot also. I'd want a dj or a band to play all my favorite music from the 70s and the 80s, and I want rock salt steaks for the main menu. All my friends can bring a dish and we'll have a big old barbque...

Have your wedding at 2p and a cake and punch reception. No dance, no meal, no booze. Cake, mints, nuts, punch. If you go to a hotel, you will only be allowed to bring in the cake. If you go to a wedding hall, they sometimes let you bring in all the catering. In that case, I would have those little dollar size buns with chicken salad also. Nothing more. Actually, your guests will appreciate just attending the wedding and a short reception. Then they can get back to whatever they were doing.

As far as my reception goes, I am going pretty simple on the food but it still is costing me quite a bit. Just do a few heavy hor d'ourves such as chicken tenders and artichoke dip, meatballs, fresh fruit and veggies, etc. Oh...and it is not mandatory that you have alcohol. I'm not going to. Alot of people don't these days. Just do a nice punch from a gorgeous fountain that coordinates with your wedding colors.

I've always been on a tight budget. I got married at the court house and went out to dinner that night. End of story.

We put the money we WOULD have spent on a big obnoxious wedding towards the downpayment on a house.
