Who said Jesus soaked the pain from all sin on the cross? That seems to remove both responsibility and consequences. I don't believe, as a Christian, that Jesus removed either responsibility or consequences from us.

I think either you're being too literal or it wasn't properly explained in the first place.

We are, in fact, responsible for each and every action we do to others. Christians believe that one single sin is enough to separate us from God forever, but out of unconditional love for us, God sent Jesus Christ to redeem us so that in spite of our sin, we can ultimately live forever with God. That does not change the responsibility or consequences of our sin here.

To answer your last question, yes, we are our brother's keeper. Yes we are responsible for our actions to God who is the Great Judge.

Jesus redeemed us and took away the sins of the world so we can be forgiven. We forgive those who have sinned against us and we ask forgiveness of the sins we have done to others. To receive Salvation and everlasting life, we must believe what Jesus did for us on the cross, turn from our wicked ways (repent) and be born again. Born again means changed as if we'd never sinned, the new person comes forth.
This new person is so changed that God comes first in all things. By putting God first everything else falls in its place.
We serve an orderly God.

"am i being rather too literal in my perception of what was said?" .... well, you weren't too literal in the content of what was actually said, so if your perception is skewed, that's why.

And the answer is Jesus didn't not soak the pain of all sin, He took the sins themselves. He can't take away the pain of what others do to you, but He can heal that pain.

Jesus Christ did not take away the pains from our sins but He endured His Father's punishment of all mankind's sins upon Himself so that those who believed in Him as Lord and Savior will be forgiven by His Father of all their sins forever. When we sin we will suffer natural consequences but God will no longer punish those who are Christians for their sins.

Jesus paid the price of sin that if we ask him to forgive us and believe in him we can be forgiven of our sin. As a believer today in Christ you can be forgiven of your sins although that does not free you from the pain if others sin against us but God will help you through it.

Exactly. Jesus removed the judgement of "death" from us because of sin, but we still have to face the consequences of sin, ours or others. And note that the only way to be free from the judgement is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour...for without Him, there is no way to escape damnation ( John 14:6 ).

He took the punishment so we didn't have to. This is atonement.
