Hi There, Firstly if its a genuine strat don't do it, Now that's out of the way my advice to you is to either have it painted in Automotive 2pack polyurethane. As a professional airbrush artist I have painted several guitars and the polyurethane is the only paint that will stand the wear associated with a musical instrument that is played regularly. These paint systems are toxic and difficult to apply for the novice, but if you remove all the hardware and the neck from the body, and carefully sand the existing paint or varnish off TAKING CARE NOT TO LOOSE THE LINES OF THE GUITAR! then take it to a reputable spray-painter or AIRBRUSH ARTIST and have them paint it in 2 stage 2pack polyurethane.

But if longevity isn't important then do the sanding using 220grit BEAR brand yellow painters sandpaper, then a 400 grit sanding pad. prime with auto primer/filler spray can. sand with 600 wet and dry, wipe clean then paint with spray can of automotive acrylic lacquer.
this will give a fairly tough finish and is easy to apply as per instructions on the can.

I hope this has been helpful
good luck

Remove everything... all the hardware, tuners, strings, bridge etc. mask what you don't want painted. Sand lightly with a fine grain sandpaper 220 or higher and then you can use Krylon or Rustoleum spray paint... works fine and can give a nice glossy finish. Practise your spray technique on some scraps before doing your ax.... But...... if you have a real strat, painting it will surely detract (greatly) from its' value.

All good advise has been given except one.

Think of this as a tattoo. There is no turning back once you started. Please do your painting on some board first and see if you REALLY want that on your Strat...
... Maybe you should take it to somebody that can actually do this.

if you paint your guitar yourself you will be relegated to painter's hell, where you will have to handle a 60 foot extention ladder by yourself in mud up to your butt, on a hill side, with a very large and very mean construction foreman yelling obscenites at you. and this will go on FOREVER time with out end. so i'd take it to someone who knew what they were doing, if i were you.
