when you try to make the appointment yourself? However, if you have your own primary doctor make it for you, they can usually get you an appointment within a week. Why is this?

they keep slots open for patients that have conditions which need immediate attention. if its just a checkup or something not urgent, they are busy people and tend to be booked way ahead

We have set schedules and time slots for seeing patients. For the most part my schedule is full about 2 months out. However if another professionals and asks, I will try my best to find a place to put them. Maybe miss part of lunch or stay a little late. We know if it's a referral, it is probably a legitimate problem.

When your doctor refers you, the specialist knows it's a legitimate condition requiring attention. This weeds out the the people that are just suffering from nothing more than a bad case of hypochondria.

this is a good way to know if they are worth seeing. if they are booked then that means people like them. and also specialist (I think) take more time with you)

For good or ill (no pun intended), most physicians are just a "good 'ol boys" type of society with a little more extensive education.
