We are going to get more decent summer, but all in the rest of Europe, not in England :(

'British Summer' is a fragile thing (some might say that the phrase is almost an oxymoron).

Few British summers are memorable for being hot and sunny; many more are instantly forgettable - scarcely different from Spring or Autumn (or even that much different from a few very mild winters!).

If you want more dramatic extremes of climate, go to continental Europe, USA or Central Asia. Britain, like it or not, is stuck on right on the edge of a big ocean, which can and often does carry an endless supply of wind, cloud and rain North-Westwards across these islands.

Camping in Devon (or Wales or anywhere north or west in the British Isles is a complete lottery. You might just get lucky and hit the one fine week of dry sunny weather - but then, again, you may well not. If camping this August, my advice is take with you some very good raincoats, umbrellas, wellie boots, waterproof ground sheets

- and also get a list of good local B&B's to stay in, if you need to dry out!

Like many people, by "decent" I used to mean warm, dry and sunny - but after a year in China with unrelenting heat I'm not so sure. I hope to bring some home to Blighty next week.

I am hoping that August/September will be much warmer. Maybe the jet stream that is stuck over us will have shifted by then - we want the sun back!!!
