Absolutely. It is the high ground between Israel and Syria. The only reason why Syria wants it back so badly is because that high ground would be useful to them to shell Israeli settlements, towns and cities.

If Israel knows what's good for them, they'll keep it.

They should have no control of anything what so ever. They are nothing more than global terrorists of the highest order. Why would you possibly believe that israel should control anything, much less the Gaza strip?

It will be nearly impossible for Israel to control the Gaza strip.
The question should have been - should the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) be sent into Gaza in substantial numbers to guard the streets of Gaza, to flush out Hamas.

That is not a viable option for Israel at the moment. In international political view, that would be called "reoccupation of Palestinian Territories". The international political fallout for Israel will be horrendous.

It is also a very expensive option, resource wise. The number of Israeli casualties will increase significantly. And Fatah will be obliged to commit political suicide to signify their solidarity against "Israeli occupation" even though it will help them rid Hamas once and for all. Then the recent support of Arab sunnis wary of Iranian influence would wane.

Historically, when you read King Cyrus' of Persia support for Nehemia's rebuilding of Jerusalem, you will find a similar political motivation the other way round. The Iranians (aka Persians) needed an ally on the western front to compensate against Medianite (Arab) influence. This time around, the Arabs need to support Israel to compensate against Persian ambitions.

Who knows when Ahmedinejad and his cohorts are gone, and the 70% of Iranians who feel they have nothing to do with Jerusalem - may then try to court Israeli relations.

The wise thing for Israel to do is to let simmering ancient hostilities not be directed at Israel. It would be a bad thing to say that Israel should exploit those hostilities. Perhaps, one day Israel could be the mediator between the ancient hostility between Arabs and Persians, as well as between sunnis and shiites but that remains a fantasy at the moment.

The Hamas' politically suicidal purging of Fatah in Gaza was unexpected by the international community. Quite a number of quarters thought that IDF should deploy into Gaza to support Fatah while the fight was going on. That would not have been wise. There are Fatah radicals who would turn around to fight the IDF, angered by a "reoccupation".

The IDF may patrol the streets of Gaza, but the conditions of poverty will be a sanctuary of hatred and terrorists against Israel.

Let the ancient hostilities settle their own scores and Israel should get out of the way.

I like to dream this dream, some may consider it politically incorrect but nonetheless a fantastic dream --- on that day, the Arabs will say to the Jews, "we have given you custody of Jerusalem but instead you have come to enjoy the prosperity of Baghdad. Please go home to the land of your forefathers to take care of Jerusalem for us."
