I recently bought a DVD of a 1980 movie that was obviously copied from VHS (never been on DVD).

While most of the movie is clear and pretty good picture, there is a orange haze at the top of the screen. Also a little static occasionaly.

Is there a way to sharpen the picture (a program perhaps)?

...if the flaws you speak of, were already on the supposed original VHS, and thus were transferred to the DVD, unfortunately, there is probably not much you're going to be able to do about it.

If you are able to download the film onto your computer, filter the film through a digital pallet software, and make the desired adjustments (kind of the way the major DVD distributors restore classic films), you will probably get the results you want; however, I understand that the software is very expensive (sort of like the AutoCad software, used by architects and drafting aficionados).

I have purchased a couple of combo DVD/VHS recording players, in the past (one of them actually had a hard drive), with software already installed, that's capable of sharpening and clarifying a VHS tape picture, before transferring it to DVD-R; I'm not sure whether machines like this, will work with films already on DVD, or DVD-R.

...sorry I couldn't have been much more help; I'm sort of still researching this, myself. Keeping your question firmly in mind, and moving this research higher up on my priorities, if I come up with anything more informative, I'll be glad to let you know...

...stay tuned!!!

Magix Movies to CD and DVD is designed to restore VHS footage and transfer it to DVD. You can buy a copy for ten dollars on eBay.

Don't buy bootlegged copies. Buy the real DVD at a real store from a real compay. At last, your problem will be fixed.
