I came back after a 20 minute journey this morning and there was a trail of silvery grey and white hair in a 20 ft long length - lots of it, not just a thin strand - looked a bit like a wig when all pulled out and clumped up. WHAT THE HECK IS THIS, PLEASE? Does anyone know. I've driven the car round the houses and it is running fine, not overheating - sweat as a nut. NEVER experienced this before - HELP!

What is hanging out of your pipe is basically your baffle
it the part of your exhaust that makes it run quietly you need to replace part of your exhaust system 9most likely the rear silencer
i don't think it is you cat converter as the inside of that is basically a specialized type off honeycombed foam these generally do not require renewing unless they become clogged or the casing gets split

and lollipop it's sweet as a nut it means very good or excellent

The "silencer" or "back-box" section of an exhaust is filled with perforated steel baffles and fibreglass padding to reduce the noise coming from your exhaust.
When the exhaust gets past its "best before date" the fibreglass padding can break down and strands of it will be blown out of the exhaust tailpipe. This is the "hair" you've found.
You'll probably notice you're exhaust note get a little louder as more and more of it comes out.
So, as the answers above mine have stated, you will need to invest in a new exhaust before long.
Hope that helps explain why it's happening as well as what is happening :)

The rear box in the exhaust has sound deadening material to reduce the exhaust noise. When this material breaks down it blows out of the exhaust looking like hair. Nothing really to worry about other then obviously needing to have the back box replaced.

Sounds like the innards of a bafflle, or possibly your catalytic converter has spewed its innards out.

Head over to a tyre & exhaust centre and ask them.

It's the padding from the baffles you will need a new exhaust.
