I've received 21 answers so far and NOT ONE has explained why west-east rather than east-west.

The rotation of the Earth has some interesting scenarios.
Its spins on an axis on which the north pole and south pole orients it relative to the Ecliptic. The velocity and spin of the earth is not constant. It does not spin In the same direction at any time. The spin continually changes relative to the poles. This continual change of direction is called precession of the poles. The spin precession make one complete cycle in an estimated 22 to 25 thoundand years.
As the earth spins which we call one rotation a day varies ,because as the earth orbits the sun its radius vector continually changes thruout the Year.
The orbit of the earth was discovered By J. Keppler to be an eliptical orbit. The lenght of the semimajor axis is called the average radius. As the earth moves within the Galaxy it also continually changes direction relative to the Galactic barry center. As the earth aborbs mass from the sun and from the cosmic its increases mass. This mass increase causes it to slow down its spin and at the same time increase the orbit radius. As the Radius increase the orbit period relative to the Sun increase make the Year a longer period of time.
Therefore, the earth's motion is never a Uniform motion ,though since the changes are very slow it appears to be.The Gravity field of the earth is a dynamic one.Hence the Earth does not do the same thing twice in reality. So it does not get bored by repetitions..

The earth and the other planets spin in the same direction because they all formed out of the same accretion disk which had a single direction of rotation itself.

The earth never changes its rotation but there has been some theories (I am unsure whether they have been upheld) that the Earths magnetic poles flip.

All the planets in the solar system rotate the in the same direction as earth, appart from Venus. Its quite funny that the planet associated with love and 'the infinite feminine' was the most difficult to understand.

No,how would you like it if someone asked 'don't you get fed up moving your arm or leg the same way'!No,its used to it,its been that way for a long time, and I think thats just great!

Would YOU get fed up breathing every 2 or 3 seconds?

Maybe thats why the Earth is at an angle - it got fed up of being upright all the time and a speeding rock was happy to help.

Short answer? Probably not.

Well...I am guessing if it did get fed up, it would have gotten fed up a few billion years ago. But then there would always be someone (like you) who would ask:
"Doesn't the Earth get tired turning haphazardly in both directions?" ;)

no. It has no feelings. It is slowing down due to the moon causing resistance with tides etc so may very very far in the future spin the other way but we are talking a very long time.
