1. On average, cats sleep about 16 hours a day, which equates to about two-thirds of their life. In fact, cats get more sleep than virtually any other animal, about twice as much as most mammals. Thus, sleeping is simply a normal behavior for cats. Just how much a particular cat will sleep, however, can depend upon many factors, including their age, their degree of hunger, their sense of security, the temperature and the weather.
2. A day has twenty-four hours, and your cat will sleep for some sixteen of them. It doesn't really rest more than a person in a single span, but instead spreads out its "naps" over the entire day.
A cat needs so much sleep because of its eating pattern. Hunting mice can take quite a bit of energy and can make a cat sleepy. The same holds true for domestic cats who "catch" only their toy mice.
Changes in sleep patterns, however, may require you to contact your veterinarian. Hyperthyroidism can cause a cat, particularly an older cat, to sleep less. If you notice that your cat is sleeping more or appears depressed when awake, this may be a sign of illness and should be checked by your vet.

They actually need to be at rest alot - a typical cat may be at rest as much as 16 hours out of a 24 hour day.
Good Luck!!!

Their saving up their energy to pounce at us in unsuspecting places.
Cats are hunters that rest to save their energy for hunting their mice or their toy ones we buy them.

I think it cos they have a very fast heartbeat and are so high strung being a higher predator and needing bursts of speed and such. So, they need lots of rest to recharge.
Dats wut I think
