I have tried Thomas Cook, they are doing 1.35 Euros for every £1? Is that good or can I get better?

I stay away from Thomas Cook...they always rip you off. The latest exchange rate is £1 = 1.49 Euros (according to Oanda.com - http://www.oanda.com). So you will want to find a rate that falls in the 1.40 - 1.49 Euros range.

When I want to exchange money, my preference is Travelex (but not the ones at the airport - I just get about 400 Euros to start off with in a variety of bills) and the ATM machine as required. The rate quoted by another poster from Marks & Spencer doesn't sound too bad...your decision to go to them though ultimately depends on how much commission they charge. Oh and always be cautious of currency exchange offices or stands that advertise zero commission - a good number of them find other ways to swindle you.

I'd check your local Post Office.
Remember that rates change daily, so keep checking the PO and Cook's.
But whatever you do, do NOT leave it to the last minute and exchange your currency at the airport or wherever. That will not be the most favourable rate, I can assure you.

Travelex - order online - collect at the airport or dock on the way out I think they still guarantee the best price. Just add a .co.uk on the end for their site. They open very early to.

Do just change a little, for the first day only.
Get the rest out of the wall (ATM) when you are there.
Best exchange rate. Just check your bank does not charge you for using your card. (Debit card should be free or token fee only.)

Less risk of loosing and over spending the first few days.

It's 1.44 at BBV in Cannon Street (London), but commission will knock that down when factored in.
