OK, a friend of mine mentioned to me that people actually are getting married via online communications.
To try to put this a bit more clearly: one of his best friends has just gotten married to a very wealthy woman from Shanghai.
He just showed up for the wedding, she has moved into the country and they never actually see each other unless they chose to, which according to my friend, is hardly ever. They can get a divorce in 2 years time. She paid HIM £50,000 to marry her - he had absolutely nothing to offer her but help to gain citizenship in the UK.
Is this completely bizarre or does it actually happn on a large scale?
Does anyone have any links or interesting tidbits to share?

Dark - I agree. I'm considering it for my debt reasons. Sod it, if I can divorce him in 2 years.

Unless the marriage is consummated there would surely be grounds to have it annulled.

You don't call this 'online marriage'. These are 'marriages of convenience' and is mostly done for the purpose of gaining residential status or citizenship. It's a scam but nothing bizarre about it. I think it happens on a large scale in developed countries like USA, UK, Germany, France etc where people from under developed countries are desperate to settle down. But I believe in almost all cases the people involved fail to achieve what they want (i.e. permanent resident or citizenship status).

You would be more surprised than I was....
When I came in England for the first time I've been told that if I want my residence here all I need to get married, live with my partner 2 years and pay him £300/month.
After 2years I just divorce but I would have my residence.
Of course I am not that type of person but lots&lots of people are doing it.
I think that is sad...is selling yourself and have a misserable time for 2 years.
Bleah...

Well i do believe that this does happen.
It is fact that depresses me actually.
People just don't seem to have RESPECT for anything anymore.
For themselves, for marriage for other people.
Marriage is a sacred thing as far as i am concerned, you make an oath you make a vow, does your word mean nothing?
There has to be another way for you to make money, and to save your respect and your name,
Think about it, think about who you are and what your worth,
When you do get married it should be a contract of love and devotion not of money.

This happens in most countries, it's illegal and sad but true. People sell their soul for money, I don't know how people could such a thing.

Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. That's all she paid and she's wealthy? He must have been poor to accept that.

it happens a lot , and they should stop it.. it's just a sly way of getting a uk passport.
they do catch people doing it, who make a living from it... but it happens far too much.
