Well, I've never written a diary, though I have written plenty of articles. I did have to keep a reading journal in high school, but I don't count that in the same vein as a diary/personal journal as it was used by the teachers to confirm I was actually reading and not simply flipping pages to make it look like I was. It was a part of my grade to keep the journal so it was basically like a book report type of deal.
I see writing in a diary/journal as confiding in something rather than someone. Essentially the only one most people allow to read their diary is themselves. Folks are writing about something that maybe they could talk about to their friends or maybe they feel they can't talk about to anyone. But they generally don't want anyone to see what they wrote. So they are less likely to write something fictional.
An article is either designed to get facts or your opinion, or a theory across on something. You read a book or go to movie and then you write a review of that book or movie to post on your blog or website (or where ever), you're writing an article on your opinion of that book or movie. You watch the cliffhanger season finale of your favorite TV show and you write an article on what you think will happen in the season premier and why it will happen, making sure to cite things that happened in the finale to bring you to this conclusion, then you're writing a theoretical article. You decide you're going to write an article about what happened the night the Titanic sank without including theories or opinions for it's sinking, just facts to let other's know what happened, then it's an article based on facts.
Short stories are none of these. Their a way to be creative, to put into words ideas for something entertaining that you have developed in your head. You're not writing about your personal life. You're not intrested in giving your opinion, a theory, or facts on something. Your intrested only in producing a work of fiction that you, and hopefully others, will enjoy.

What motivates me is simply the fact that I love to write. If I have an idea to write something, I just start writing, and it turns into a story. Of course I like the challenge as well, but really the best way to become a writer would be to write stories or books instead of diary entries or articles. I was never sure why I wanted to write stories. It just comes naturally, I suppose. Whenever I think of something to write about, it always seems much better to put in a story instead of anything else.
Hope this helps.

Simply put, a short story is easier, yet more fun, to write.
Also, you can add many layers of meaning, and it's still straightforward when writing - a diary entry has to make it clear what has happened without explicitly recounting, and an article is just dull.

Because its so fun to write. Every aspect of writing have its own ups. A short story is different from a full lengh book that is different from tv/movie that is different from diary... Johan
