Is there any time limit within which the marriage registration has to be done? Can a marriage registration be done even after many months/years after the actual wedding ritual has taken place if we have all the required documents?

Any time you can get your marriage registered, no time limit for this but what is important that if you are looking for registration under section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act,1955 then the district where this marriage took place ,the marriage will be registered there itself ,with proof of marriage by way of certificate issued by the priest or temple, photographs of the marriage ceremonies, wedding card, at least two witnesses (best the parents or blood relations of both)/ in case of Delhi then a gazetted officer who attended the marriage, age proof of both, residence proof of both, proof of identity of all & passport photographs of all. Contact the Marriage registrar of the district who is also the tehsildar of the district.

You ought to have indicated your religion. Uptil now, registration of a Hindu marriage is not necessary. A neighbour of mine who was married in l964 required a marriage certificate as the same was required (not affidavit) for his and his wife visa for a foreign country, and he got his marriage registered without any problem by completing the formalities. So, pease do not mix up the issues - the fact of marriage with registration of marriage and marriage certificate.
