Well, let's see. When Disco died at the end of the 1970s, there was sort of a void left. Overall pop music gradually formed a whole new mega-category that today is now called "Dance & Electronica".
Within this main category, there are many smaller sub-genres. These include Techno, Trance, House, Freestyle, Dance-pop, Eurodance, Hi-NRG, Progressive Dance, Tribal, Electro, and many many others.
They have a wide range between them...House is a little more "soulful"... while Techno and Electro are often considered a "hard dance" sound...and Trance is usually a fast but heavy-melodic sound...while Freestyle has a slight latin-feel, and Dance-pop is usually a typical Pop music with a Dance beat.
But they all are part of the main Dance/Electronica genre because they depend heavily on synthesizer sounds, and pulsating dance beats.

One of my favorite "techno" groups of all time is Crazy Penis. I kid you not. You can buy some of their stuff on eBay but it's pretty expensive. If you get a chance to listen to anything by them, I'd start with their first CD, "A Nice Hot Bath With... on Paper Recordings. Their "Wicked Is Music" CD is pretty good also. The song "You Started Something" was used in a Southern Comfort ad.
