Sorry if this answer is too long, but please read all of it to gain a good understanding about this war and the past part of the middle east to further understand the situation.
First of all, let me adress an amazing coincidence that I discovered while researching the middle east. This might have no relevance to the situation but it is strange to notice. On September 11, 1991, the current President Bush's father, made a speech as president rambling on about a New World Order! Now, 10 years later to the date, terrorists bomb the World Trade Center and create a new conflict, creating a type of New World Order! This spooked me out a little bit, but again, use your own judgement to determine whether that is important or not. Now on to your answer!
The Iraqi situation that we have right now is a very confusing and strange reality to almost everyone. The United States, as you probably already know, was attacked by terrorists on 9/11/01 by a group called Al Qaeda, which was commanded by Osama Bin Laden.
Recently, there was a PEW poll that was done for the muslim population of the United States, and suprise, suprise, a large number of them believe that 9/11/01 was carried out by the United States government.
The United States, in response to the attack on 9/11/01 decided to retaliate against the group that claimed responsibility. Also, notice most of the hijackers on 9/11/01 were from Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally for oil. At the beginning, the U.S. was winning the battle against the group Al Qaeda. Then, U.S. intelligence agencies stated that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction in his possession, yet they did not say whether his weapons were nuclear of biological or chemical. The chemical weapons had all been taken away by the U.N. years earlier. The U.S. believed though, that he may have had nuclear weapons which has turned out to be completely untrue.
In the year 1980, under Saddam Hussein's rule, Iraq decided to invade part of Iran for oil. Noticing that Iran was weakened in its leadership and military because of the recent revolution, Saddam went to war, thinking it would be easy. In the first few years, Saddam was doing very well, but Iran had built up a Baseej force of over a million people who ran human wave attacks against the Iraqi army on the ground. The U.S. and Russia and China, who were fearful of the Islamic extremist ideas that Iran had, decided to help Saddam in any way they could. They even supplied him some conventional and some unconventional weapons, such as bombs, missiles and some chemicals for weapons. Saddam used these chemicals against the Kurds, who were thought to have helped Iran and against the Iranians themselves. Close to 1 million Iranians died in the war lasting from 1980-1988. During this war, Iran made its FIRST purchase from A.Q. Khan's nuclear company which sold, ilegally, nuclear material such as tubes that could enrich uranium. A.Q. Khan is a Pakistani scientist who is named "Father of the bomb" in Pakistan.
After the U.S. intelligence agencies stated that Saddam had been able to get weapons of mass destruction, the U.S. abandoned its plans to attempt to finish off the Taliban and Al Qaeda and instead went into Iraq. The CIA conducted some very risky operations shortly before the U.S. went to war where they attempted to kill Saddam with airstrikes but they failed and even alerted Saddam to their prescence. Very soon after that, Saddam let all the people he considered to be a threat out of his jails and allowed them to have a resistance to the U.S. occupation. Shortly afterward, the U.S. quickly invaded Iraq taking control. The U.S. disbanded the Iraqi military and intelligence agencies and began everything anew. To me this was a grave mistake, they should have kept the order and the Iraqi military, instead the U.S. military has made enemies who are trained at killing and gathering some amazing intelligence.
Just an interesting fact, Saddam's intelligence rivaled that of Hitler's during WWII. This is the reason there was no terrorism in Iraq before the U.S. invasion, anyone who spoke out against Saddam was immediately killed or locked up in prison. Saddam hated foreign fighters even more and would not let any into his country.
So, the U.S. won the war against Saddam's military but could not keep the peace in Iraq. The U.S. did a very poor job of planning for the war's aftermath of a rivalry between the sunnis and the shiites. In fact, this administration seemed to believe that the Iraqi people would open their arms to the U.S. soldiers and praise them for what they did. The U.S. also believed that the Iraqi people would set up a democracy. Even this new government doesn't really mean anything, because if you analyze most of the individuals, you will see that most own their own private militias or most are loyal to Muqtada Al Sadr, a VERY popular shiite. The shiites (majority) are trying to take control of Iraq for themselves and basically kick the sunnis out. This led to the Sunni Insurgency that the U.S. is now fighting today.
Now on to Al Qaeda In Iraq. Al Qaeda in Iraq formed shortly after the invasion of Iraq by U.S. forces. This Al Qaeda took the ideas from the Al Qaeda on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan and made them their own. They share very little information with the official along the Afghan-Pakistan border and have basically been working alone. Lately, the U.S. miltary arrested a top official of Al Qaeda In Iraq, who claimed that he had contact with Bin Laden and other top officials from the other Al Qaeda. So, in truth, the war in Iraq, has now made Al Qaeda even stronger having a foothold now in Iraq. This is probably a reason why the U.S. news media and Homeland Security claimed Al Qaeda is stronger than it has ever been.
Right now, the main threat, however to Iraq is the sunni-shiite civil war which Al Qaeda fuels with attacks against shiites. News reports have claimed that close to 100-200 thousand people are now dead and that the number could be closer to 300,000 people. This is mainly due to death squad and militancy violence, but it doesn't exclude the car bombs that go off regularly and the suicide bombers who also seem to have a great impact on Iraq's death toll and morale. If the U.S. leaves, the media has said that the Pentagon reports that at least 1 million people could die.
Foreign fighters have been using Iraq to train, the news has reported several times. Here is an article showing the foreign prescence in Iraq. If the article doesn't show up, look up "most foreign insurgents in Iraq are Saudis: Report" on yahoo news.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070716/wl_afp/usiraqsaudimilitary_070715201812
Now onto Iran. After the Iranian revolution in 1979, Iran and America's diplomatic ties were cut leaving them enemies. Iranian students in 1980, captured about 70 Americans in the U.S. embassy in Iran and held like 50 of them for 444 days. Iran also decided to call the U.S. the Great Satan. This completely shut down all diplomatic relations between the countries. This is the reason why the U.S. sided with Saddam over Iran during the 8 year war between the powers.
Iran's government is shiite and so are most of Iraq's people. Because of this, Iran is trying to do everything it can to help the shiites come to power in a peaceful way. So, they started helping out the shiite militias in eliminating American troops (which the Iranians hate) and helping them get rid of sunni insurgents. This situation for Iran is a great one. But, if the shiites don't take power soon, Iran might be overwhelmed by refugees which Iran doesn't want. Both the U.S. and Iran want their to be a peaceful Iraq soon, but the only difference is that Iran wants the shiites to come to power, while the U.S. wants a democracy.
Hope this answer wasn't too long, but I hope you learned a lot more about this very complex situation. Sorry if it was too long.

You're not the only one who's confused. So am I. I know we supposedly went in because of Saddam and hiw chemo weapons everyone thought he had and wouldnt let people see but he's been out of the govt for a while now and is dead and we're still in Iraq fighting a civil war essentially.
Now they say we're fighting Al-Queda in Iraq but I thought that Bin Laden was in Afghanistan or somewhere like that. They're fighting a war but not searching for these people and stopping those that did 9/11 it seems like at times. And our president is always requesting for funding from the US for the war when nothing ever seems to be going on with our domestic issues
The other thing that confuses me is our Senate and Congress with regards to the Iraq pullout suggestions and bills. Arent our senators and congressmen suppose to represent the people? Isnt that why they were elected in the first place. But yet if the vast majority of the people in the US are against the war in Iraq now and have a low opinion of the president and everything, then why are so many republicans still voting for what the president wants. You would think if they represent the American people there would be more bills being passed for the Iraq pullout

Our invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 as no Iraqi had anything to do with 9/11. And it is highly unlikely that Osama Bin Laden and Sadaam Hussein would have ever been allies since Bin Laden is an Islamic extremist and Hussein was a secularist. Therefore I conclude that the $25 million given to Dick Cheney when he resigned from Halliburton in order to become VP has more to do with our invasion of Iraq than anything else especially since the invasion was based on lies. If you will look it up, Halliburton got all the big construction contracts from the American Govt. in Iraq. Now, there are the facts and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. It's called politics.

There's a great deal of misunderstanding as to why we went to war in Iraq, especially since it appears that Iraq didn't fund Al Qaeda any more (much less, really) than it's neighbors, and since they didn't really have a whole lot of WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). Beyond that, there isn't substantial evedence linking Bin Laden to Iraq, and if they DID have WMDs, they certainly didn't threaten us or any of our allies with them (not since 1990, anyway). So, as I understand it, we're at war in Iraq because Bush really wanted to go to war with Iraq. That's it. No great reason. No threat there. Some people say that it would be a great foothold for democracy to begin to grow in the Middle East, but that's just foolish. It isn't working, and if it does, it won't for long. This region is some of the oldest civilizations in the world, and democracy just isn't how their governments work. Does this answer your question? I doubt it, because I'm just as confused. There just isn't a good reason for us to be there. I could go on... but that's the bottom line.

The reason we went into Iraq was because of intelligence that seemed to indicate Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction. After all he was a brutal dictator, responsible for the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands of his own people.
As it turned out the intelligence was incorrect, but the troops were sent in, and they did take out weapons of Mass destruction in Sadaam's two sadistic sons and Sadaam himself who was hung to death.
Unfortunately we are living in the post 9-11 era and we will likely be at war for a long time. Fortunately we have a President who understands that and has kept this nation safe since those attacks.
There are evil people who are planning another horrific attack on our nation. So, focusing on preventing that has to be a main concern of our Government now.
My cousin just joined the Army and is Paratrooper training now. I suppose he will wind up in Afghanistan or Iraq. I asked him why he joined and his answer made me proud of him, he said, "I want to marry and have a family one day. I do not want my children to have to deal with this war."
I hope I helped clear some stuff up for you.

In my opinion, our government is trying to get more resources for the development of their own pockets. Regardless of how many people die or how many people suffer. And they also want to take more control of the Middle East so that all progress there will be for their own gain.
You're right. Our government should focus more on developing the nation by working on the inside. There are many things that are happening everyday. Murders,Robberies,Disaster Stricken areas, Drug trafficking and Drug abuse. All this could have been prevented if the government kept a close watch on these things.
Iraq might not affect you directly today but robberies and murders can.

Iraq was funding terrorist but not the 9/11 terrorist.
So you are right.
But that was only part of the Iraq war and Iraq is only the loudest part of this war on terror.

Terrorists assaults have been dealt with without conflict in the previous Bush got here into workplace. You relatively can not have self belief that George Bush has yours or any of our appropriate activity at coronary heart. He does not omit any sleep questioning on the subject of the warriors and innocents that lose their life. yet I wager you he could lose some sleep questioning approximately his oil wells in Texas. Democrates sound puzzled because of fact after Bush became into elected each and every thing grew to alter into particularly corrupt. How can one be logical in a corrupt device that spies and lies extra suitable than the known to which they are accustomed. i certainly do not think of they have been arranged to preserve this point of corruptness.
