10x + 5y = 20

Substract 10x from both sides

10x - 10x + 5y = 20 - 10x

5y = 20 - 10x

Divide both sides by 5

5y/5 = 20/5 - 10x/5

y = 4 - 2x

2x + y - z = 5 3y + 2z = 9 10x + 4y + z = 2 Since the middle equation has no x term, we'll do what we have to, to eliminate the x term using the other 2. 10x + 5y - 5z = 25 10x + 4y + z = 2 y - 6z = 23 3y + 2z = 9 y - 6z = 23 9y + 6z = 27 10y = 50 y = 5 5 - 6z = 23 -6z = 18 z = -3 2x + 5 - -3 = 5 2x = -3 x = -3/2 Always check values in the original equations to verify solutions.

y=-2x+4

The work:
10x+5y=20
10x-10x+5y=20-10x (Subtraction prop. of Equality )
5y/5=20/5 - 10x/5 (Division Prop. of Equality)
y=4-2x (simplify)
y=-2x+4 (com. prop.) either way it's still the same.)

In case you forgot, consider equations like if they were a set of scales. You want one side to be equal to the other. In order to find out what y or x (depending on what you need) you have to isolate it. Understanding the properties are very important but essentially its just "if you move something on one side you have to do it on the other" and the scales stay balanced. That is why you have to move 10x and then divide both sides by 5.

If you knew this but didn't want to do it, sorry I wasted 30 seconds of your life.

10x + 5y = 20
or, 5y = 20 - 10x
or, 5y = 10( 2 - x )
or, y = (10( 2 - x )) / 5
or, y = 2 - x
