Do you know what kind of spider it was?

It was large and I hyperventalated and passed out real fast. I don't think I ever cleaned my house so thouroughly in my life. I believe it was a black widow. Now that I said that I bet you I will find one tomorrow..=/

I hate spiders! The biggest spider I ever had in my house was about 18 yeras ago when I unpacked my first ever brand new imported furniture. The furniture was made in Brazil, all thick bamboo and rattan and woven reeds, and I was thrilled. Until the biggest ugliest hairiest spider I had ever seen came scrambling out of the rear leg or the sofa.
It was honestly about 4 or five inches across, brown and black, and my friend and I screamed our heads off and both started stomping at it and I ran and got a can of RAID and doused the darn thing til it was a scurrying pile of foam but it just kept on going! It was the thing that wouldn't die.
I really don't know what kind it was for sure, and there wasn't enough left by the time we finally killed it to take it someplace for identification (I ended up beating it to death with a hard-cover Webster's dictionary), but a fellow I worked with said it sounded like a banana spider. He may have been pulling my leg about that.

Sorry I can't beat any of the previous answers, the biggest one I've ever seen in my house was on my wedding day and it was prob only 8cm or so. Still I freaked out but I killed it without screaming because I didn't want to frighten my bridesmaids (both of whom would have died of fright...I still haven't told them to this day)
On a related topic, how's this for a horrible story: another time it was dark in the room and I thought it was a leaf on the carpet. I picked it up and immediately threw it across the room because it was furry (I thought it was a moth and expected it to fly off). Imagine my horror when I discovered it was a large spider...(not too large, only 3cm or so, but still!)

I found A wolf spider just inside my front door on the wall
it was almost 6 inches across !

i used to live on a farm, and we once saw a giant bird eating spider happily sitting on top of our tv. freaked us out a bit. it was about 5cm long. blooming huge!
