What should I do to help her calm down?

(seriously, she does).

Nothing. Let her dream.

The barking is just involuntary body gestures. Humans do the same thing (twitching, talking, etc).

Hi!

If you see the REM and other indicators of dreaming, a gentle contact and soothing sounds can penetrate the dream state and connect her to the comfort of the familiar without waking her. After a number of episodes, your sleeping friend can sub-consciously call up that same feeling without any effort from you and learn to take some charge of her sleeping realities.

Good wishes.

Our dog used run in his sleep. He'd be asleep on his side, but he'd make running movements with his legs. After he woke up (dreams are pretty short) from running, barking or growling, one of us would stroke him and talk to him quietly. He didn't seem bothered. I think we did this mostly for us.

mine does too, we always say shes just chasing squirrels in her dreams. she doesnt seem upset, just restless, and she just kicks her legs under the covers and growls a bit until she wakes herself up. i wouldnt worry about it, but if she seems genuinely upset each time she wakes up, i would ask the vet. good luck!

If it's a serious problem consider discussing it with your vet. He might recommend a medication to help soothe her, or help to figure out what might be causing them.
