Not race. But definitely his celebrity status

The charges aren't racial, but there are a couple of racial aspects to the overall Vick story. Number one is that Vick probably wouldn't still be the starting QB in Atlanta if he were white. Atlanta is the most predominately black major city in the USA. They would rather have a black QB who doesn't win than a winning QB that wasn't black. Vick puts 22,000 mostly black extra fans in the seats than what the Falcons had before he came. That is why the owner has fired a couple of coaches and sticks with Vick even through bad play and bad behavior - pure greed on the owner's part.
Second is the fact that Vick is a huge fish in the very small pond that is Surry County, Va. The county is more than 50% black and so is the DA and top cops. Many residents and the Feds believe that the local officials have been protecting Vick down there. They have known what's going on, but look the other way for whatever reasons you can imagine. They still haven't filed charges against Vick even though there is a mountain of evidence to do so. The Feds will probably investigate corruption all the way to city hall down there. So there are racial aspects, but not about the actual federal charges.

You think there would be less outrage if he were white? No way. Dog fighting is disgusting and indicates a lack of compassion on the part of all involved. The way the losing dogs were killed (allegedly, of course) only underscores that. If the evidence proves Vick's guilt, I hope he gets the maximum sentence. If he were any other race I would feel exactly the same.

Wow. I just read johndoe's answer. What a complete moron. Giving someone a long jail sentence for cruelty to animals is sick, but being cruel to those animals is not? A lack of compassion for an animal is a short step to a lack of compassion to a human.

Just because YOU don't think it's wrong to treat an animal cruelly doesn't mean you are right. Dog fighting is a felony in at least 46 states (I've seen the number as 46 or 48) and a misdemeanor in the others. Cruelty to animals is a crime in every state. It used to be (and still is in some societies) thought that wives and children were nothing more than property and their "owners" could treat them however they wanted. The fact that some people have no problem with animal or human abuse does not make it right. Some people think robbing banks is ok, some people think rape is ok, but the vast majority do not agree. The law says that ownership of a dog is not justification to treat it cruelly. If Michael Vick is guilty of the charges against him, he deserves to have his life ruined and football carreer ended.

Yes, and those who say it is not need to come to reality. I mean really, people are calling for his head already and there has been no trial.

For those who say he is guilty answer this question:
Does anyone have audio/visual evidence that shows he fought and executed dogs?

Race plays a role in a lot of high profile cases. Baseball, when Mark McGuire was accused of using steroids not a big issue, with Barry Bonds all of a sudden he should not be in the Hall of fame. Again, some do believe race is not an issue, but in my opinion it is.

I don't think so at all, but I do think there is more to this that what's been told.

Emmitt Smith thinks that they're using Vick to get to the real people. I really hope that is the case.

If it were a white player like Manning or Brady, it would be even more popular if you could imagine that. Would you see this same question if it were a white player with the same popular stature in the NFL. Probably not, because no one asks if it's a race thing when a white man is on the bubble.

No, and no one really thinks it does, but they talk about it on SportsCenter because it makes people keep watching.

If anything, the fact that he's black makes it a little less surprising, for good or for worse...if it were Manning or Brady killing injured dogs with their bare hands, I promise you it'd be even more of a shock and outrage.

If you don't think so, THEN WHY ASK THE QUESTION??? Why start up a bunch of crap??? I'm so tired of all the racial whiners and the people who are always bringing race into things. He committed a serious felonies, that's why he is being charged.
