To David J; The question doesn't pertain to just the present issues of war. It relates to the old past as well. I thought about what if NO leader ever had started going into war...then NO NATION could have retaliated, or followed its steps...maybe nobody needed to die...maybe we didn't even need to have soldiers in the first place...
maybe it's far better to live in harmony with all our brothers and sisters.

Is the law given to us from above not enough to make people live peacefully and harmoneously? It's the law that doesn't seek to destroy, but promises to save.
Every one has his own choice of belief.
And I truly respect every answer on this page.

How wonderful it is that despite the clashes of ideas and mount of contrasting notions, we still can agree on something...and still preserve our respect for one another. Thank you!

War is a strange thing. If you defend yourself from an attacker, you have gone to war.
If a man lives life according to a virtuous code and serves a morality that he believes in, should he allow others to destroy him and what he believes in?
When is it right to go to war and when is it right to seek peace by other methods?
Wise people are needed to attend these real issues in world politics.

because sometimes unfortunately war is nescassary. think what would have happened if no one took a stand against hitler? and as far as the war on terror is concerned i fought in afghanistan and iraq and if u could see the suffering that these people have went through both from the taliban and saddam's regime u would not be asking this question. i watched my friends die for a cause that they believed in. and by the way the military is a volunteer force so if u don't want to go to war u don't actually have too! the world needs leadership and sometimes they have to make decisions that many people don't like. and until u have served and actually put your "head on the chopping block" you have no right to judge a war or a leader until u have seen the situation firsthand. and u should feel lucky that u live in a country where u have the right to ask that because under many other so called leaders u would have been shot or worse for even speaking out against them!
in response to ur additional details that would be a nice sentiment but unfortunately thats just not human nature. people are always going to disagree with each other and sometimes people get hurt in the process. i agree that the world would be a better place but the reality is that it does happen and if no one stood for the people who cant stand up for themselves the world would be a lot worse than it is now. yes war is hell, it really is a living nightmare, and it should never happen but sometimes the only way to make peace IS to go to war. think of this without leaders there would be no government, without government there would be no laws, wich would mean people could do whatever, whenever without worrying about the consequences. imagine a world where murderers, rapists, and zealots could do harm without anyone stepping in to stop it. if everyone COULD live in harmony with each other then we wouldn't need leaders, but since different people have different beliefs(many of wich they will defend violently to the grave) people will never be able to come together like that.

One does not just vote for a leader because he may NOT lead us to war. We vote for him/her because there are other issues, but believe it or not, it is your choice, there are circumstance when a leader must go to war for the national interest and safety of the entire nation and their way of life.
Throughout history it has been for many reason, and many selfish and what we might call for no reason. But do we sit at a point in history that we are using our morality and judgments from this point of our existence to condemn, judge or ridicule those reasons of the past? One can not necessarily make any judgment of right or wrong with any sincerity because of our unique place in time.
As for me, I want the leader to have the will and the courage to take a nation to war if it means protecting those that live in it. A leader as in our country has not put any head on a block throughout our history.....mind you many of our enemies have done so and want to do so still this day.
Good question, did you post it in the political area too?

War is a necessary evil. I wouldn't want to be taken over by a Hitler type person.

The alternative would probably be a dictatorship. War is unavoidable.

Sometimes people need to be forced to do things. There is evil in the world and hiding your head in the sand doesn't change that fact.

You are right, we shouldn't have any leaders.
We wouldn't have to pay any taxes for security, welfare, education, social security or any other programs.
