8 months is quite a long time. If he decides to fire you, so what. At least you are following your dream. You can always get another job, but you may never get the opportunity to create a film again.

If you can afford to take a whopping 8 months off of work, why worry if they are going to terminate you? Just get another job when you're finished. Let's face it, if they can do without you for 8 months, they'll realize they can do without you forever.

Depending on how large of a company or how long you've been with them, some offer employees a 'sabbatical' type leave of up to a year - no pay - but they will hold your job for you until the specified time that you've requested. I wouldn't recommend telling them specifically what you are leaving for, just tell them something very generic like pursuing creative interests. Good luck to you.

i think no one can do that but you have to make your time schedule for your make films and your work hours .. try to do both things to do .. one you work at wherever you are at to make money to earn pay to pay off bills, etc and also you can make film after work or during late evenings but i know it is stressful for you to do both that is only way to keep your job.. i don't think that anyone will do the same as you do ask your boss for 8 months off .. i think it is not fair but i know it sucks .. so try to figure it out how to do keep your job and do film at the same time.. for example if you are done with your film maybe end up to big screen if you are lucky then quit your job then become full time director from any big name movie company like Paramount, 20th Century Fox or etc etc so think about your choices to make decisions to dream big .. Don't try do it or don't do it from Yoda quote from Star
Wars eh anyway good luck to your future film ....

I just got my leg amputated and got six months off. I fell off a dirt bike... you can try that. Otherwise maybe say you are going on a missionary to a third world country.... that would be lying though... Good luck man!

Leave your laptop and your family pictures on the desk because the temp that does the work for eight months won't mind at all ?

You request a "leave of absence". If your employment is
based on seniority. You will lose the eight months time you
are gone. If you have ten years now. You will not have ten
years and eight months, when you get back. :-})
