polar stuff dissolves polar stuff and nonpolar dissolves nonpolar.

if you mix one nonpolar substance with a polar substance, they will not dissolve and 2 distinct layers will form.

As a general rule (there are exceptions), substances that are ionic will be highly soluble in a polar liquid. Moreover, Substances that are not ionic will be highly soluble in a non-polar liquid.
