If your fish has lived for more than a hour in the water, it should last without water conditioner. I wouldn't count on that happening the next time you change water though. Water treatment plants change the amount of chlorine added to the water all the time. They treat based on the bacteria count, so high bacteria will mean additional chlorine. You might have just hit a low bacteria count day and your fish got lucky. If you try to go without conditioner and still use tap water, you are sitting on a ticking time bomb. Not IF but WHEN you hit a high chlorine day, your fish will be toast. Call it lucky today, but get the water conditioner before you add any more water to your bowl of tank. I would certainly call dechlorinating water treatments a very, very must for any fish keeper using tap water.

If you haven't added the betta to the tank yet, don't, odds are high it will kill the fish within the hour.

If the fish is still in it's original store water, that would be the safest place for it overnight.

If it's in tapwater already, you need to get some conditioner to treat the water (some stores like WalMart are open 24 hrs and have conditioner in their pet supplies).

Chlorine is highly toxic to fish, and they can die in 1-2 hours depending on the concentration of chlorine in the water and the temperature (toxicity increases with temperature). Your water company may use chloramine which is somewhat less toxic, but it will stay in the water longer. If in doubt as to which your water company uses, and you need to get something because your betta is in tap water now, get a product that says it will remove or neutralize both, and use the dose recommended for chloramine. If the fish is in it's original water, you can wait till tomorrow and call the water supplier to find out which they use.

ok water conditioner helps take out the extra ingredient found in tap water. in public water there is Alto of Iron that effect the fish. if you use bottled water it would be perfectly fine but never fully empty the container there needs to be some bacteria in the water for the fish. if you change the whole thing the fish could go into shock and could possibly die but water conditioner should be used if using tap water.

I would leave him in the temporary bowl. Fish can die instantly from chlorine poisoning. Even the dirty water is safer since if he gets a little sick he can get better tomorrow once he is in clear water (but he may not get sick from being in the old water, depending on how bad it is. If you hav ea filter that will help)

I am rather surprised that it lived without the conditioner thus far, and since it has, it should be ok until you get the conditioner, provided that you will be getting it asap.

water conditioners arent a "must" but they are recommended.

there are alot of factors involved, but fishes can handle some chlorine. very little ammounts , as it will affect their gills.

The thing is, you will be fine without water conditoner, but it isnt recommended as you know.
