I'm new to the english vocabulary. What does it mean, "Alternate phone number" does it mean someone else for emergancy contact?

Not necessarily, no. Alternate just means "different." If you have a home phone, you might give a cell phone number as an "alternate." Basically a "different" way to reach you.

Yes,it means if no one can be reached at the first phone number,what phone number should be called next (this being the 2nd contact to reach).

It would be like if you had a home phone that would be your main # and then your work or cell phone #'s would qualify as an alternative # for you to be reached at.

More likely, it's a home phone number if you gave a cell phone number, or office number instead of home number, etc.
