This may be hard to type, easier if I can hand write. I'll try to be creative with the typing though.
The key to all math problems are the units. People multiply the numbers together, but forget the units are also multiplied.
Lets say you are paid $1 for ever hour you work & you go to work for 8 hours. Easy, right? Look at how that is figured out. 1 $/hr x 8 hrs => the numbers multiplied together equal 8. The units $/hr x hr = $hr/hr. hr/hr equals 1, so you can drop it (like 5/5 = 1) and this leaves only $. Therefore 1 $/hr x 8 hrs = $8. That's what you worked out in your head, right.
Using this same concept on your problem, 5/8 lbs x 2 $/lb = 10/8 $lbs/lbs. First the number, 10/8 = 5/4 (divide top & bottom by 2). Next units. lbs/lbs = 1, therefore you are left with only $, so putting the number and units together, you get $5/4 or $1.25. I can explain this much better if hand written, write byrneosu@yahoo.com if you want to see that.

1. 5/8 x $2
same as:
5/8 x 2/1 = (5 x 2) divided by (8 x 1)= 10/8
2. 10 divided by 8 = 1 2/8 = 1 1/4
3. 1 1/4 = $1.25 per candle

If you can't figure out how to multiply $2 by 5/8, it's time to throw in the towel.
