A little device that plugs into a USB port, can store a few gigs worth of files. Think of it as a replacement for a floppy drive, with no moving parts

From my perspective different manufactures have coined different terms, like jump drive(Picture 1), flash drive, thumb drive, memory stick etc.
They are all the same thing a small device that acts as a portable hard drive to store computer files or folders on.
Details: Like most products they vary in price, the price usually reflects how much data (or how many songs..) the thumb drive can hold.
MORE: Thumb drives plug into a computer from the USB port (Picture 2). Thumb drives are a Plug N Play device, just insert them into a USB port and a temporary drive usually E:, or F: is created on your computer. You can access this drive by double clicking on my computer and the device will be located there.
Functionality: Most common use of my thumb drive is to get a Quickly get a Photo from one computer to another.
Hope that helps -- Mike

It is an electronic chip which plugs into a computer and functions as a hard drive to copy files to itself for portability to other computers. It is usually USB, and the first versions were quite small, but good for music files and such. They have grown in capacity, but I don't know how far they have gotten. I could see a lot of potential, if the size was large enough, for people to share files at school or take work home with them, etc. I've never used one, but I hear that they are pretty handy in the right circumstances.

A jump drive (aka flash drive) is a small (usually easily transportable) hard drive. You can store files on this as an extra drive or as a means to take files from one computer to the next. Most of my friends use this for college projects so they can work on them at home and at school.

The correct term is actually "Flash drive" because it uses flash memory. Basically, you use it to store files and what not to transport with you or from computer to computer.
Oh, and never call it a jump drive, thumb drive, etc.

A "Jump Drive" is a "slang" term for a USB Flash Drive which in laymen's terms is a very very tiny hard drive that can be used on anyone's PC or Mac and can hold from 64MB to several GB's now.
Go to Google and type in "Jump Drive" or USB Flash Drive and you'll see a picture of several, I'm sure.

Another name for a flash drive, usb drive, usb stick, etc. There are probably 10 different names for the same little gadget.
