Donna is part right.
If there are pulley fittings at the top of the groove the sash slides in, there are counterweights concealed in the window frame, (behind the trim).
Most of the time there is a removable panel in the groove, (probably painted over), to allow you to access the weight area and reconnect the weights with a new rope, (cotton clothesline is fine), and balance the sash so it stays where you put it.
You may have to remove the trim to do it.

Your sash cord/chain is broken.
You need to remove the lower sash, and on each side is a plate screwed on. Under that plate is a sash weight (a long lead weight) that attaches to the sash through a pulley system.

The best solution is to have a new modern vinyl window installed. Me, I painted a nice piece of 1/2" x 1/2" the same color as the window frame and prop it up in the window slot on either side. Blends right in and works like a charm!

It is because the old ropes that are on wheel pullies on the sides is worn out. I just get an old yard stick and use the measured cut piece to hold up. When you want to close the window, just take the stick away, and lay flat on the sill out of the way. You will know where it is when you need it again.
A window fan will help hold it up to when in use.
