My roommate and I share the same internet connection. He does a lot of downloading and uses most of the bandwidth. I'd like to get my share of it (since I pay for it too), how would I go about doing this? We share a router, he is connected by wire, I am wireless. I tried downloading a program called Netlimiter to try and control how much connection each of us get. Didnt seem to work out, dont think it allowed me to do so. What can I do?

Some file sharing programs will actually let you limit the bandwidth you use. Ask your roommate if he could please limit his bandwidth.

Since you BOTH own that connection, you should BOTH be able to use it. I guess, wait a couple of months. If he is still hogging the internet, let him pay for it all by himself, and possibly get a new internet connection, for yourself.

Verizon, Cingular, and other companies make wireless adapters for your laptop, which you pay a monthly fee for. [These adapters use cellphone wireless signals to access internet]

Since you are using a router to share your connection there is nothing you can do, unless your router supports Bandwidth limiting. If you were using a server you could install the program on the server to control the bandwidth.

Sorry.....

Look bud its your internet, either man up and block them or you could do the more civilized thing and talk to them about them chip in so you guys can get a faster connection with more bandwidth. I had a similar situation only in this case i have the "Macintosh piece of crap" and my PC using roommates were hogging all of the bandwidth with WOW and XBL, while i was trying to do tests and such. We all sat down like gents and we agreed that the easiest thing to do was to pay more get more bandwidth and split the bill.

Depending on the sophistication of your router you can give lower priority access to programs or ports that are used. Ie. every time IM is used you can give it a Bulk(low Priority routing rate) and you can give HTTP Premium priority. That's all I can think of since he has wired access.
