Even young males growing up in productive homes nowadays with both parents present seem to want to hit the streets. They think that's what being a black man is all about. How do we change that trend?

I think at some point more focus should be put on black men who are doin the right things and playin by the rules, alot of times we forget about these brothas. Ive seen quite a few black men with degrees and alot of potiental selling themselves short in jobs like csr's or insurance. We need to get these guys internships, contacts, etc and put the money behind them, theyll lift the rest up. Having black men WITH degrees and no job dosent help because it only re-enforces men with no education beliefs that college is a waste of time.

Oh yeah, and black history needs to be about more than slavery..More positive stories need to be told like black Wall Street. and how blacks designed and built the REAL Wall Street in NYC.

I disagree with Dan on so many levels that it's not funny.

Teaching black kids about their history provides confidence. It is reassuring that black people are humans just like anyone else. Don't sit there in denial and act like racism doesn't exist. There are people everyday who are still being treated like they're animals and when it's all over how are they supposed to walk away from that!? They have their history to lean on. Like I've said, black history helps encourages a lot of black people. When I learn parts about black history I don't walk away feeling superior than other races, but instead I'm encouraged. It's really selfish of you to say to rid black history because you're afraid black people will think they're better than other races. You already think black people are better than other races. Black history month is just a token in place of 40 acres and a mule. I could care less if the US got rid of black history month. Instead black children, black people period, should learn as much as they can everyday. I'm not so much surprised that someone is trying to discourage another black child from learning as much as they can. I don't know why I expected anything...

If black people do not learn their history how will we know how we're supposed to be treated? We would be too vulnerable to racist attacks. That would be taking 100 steps backwards to listening to what 'other' races say about us...to another extent. We already deal with that crap today (Loud, chicken, rap music, ghetto, thugs, etc.)

My idea of a solution:

Drug dealers create fear in the communities, but the only way we can push forward is if we do not participate in the 'no snitch rule'. And I know it's hard but we really need to support our own businesses. Segregation might be the best thing that ever happened to us.

If I did not make sense, sorry. That MF Dan pissed me off.

Positive image and self-esteem starts in the house. Parents are the first teachers for their children. When we instill quality thoughts into our children and make them realize that we expect a high standard from them by setting one, then more than likely, we won't have to worry about the street claiming our young men and women.

Many black people you see there are not all of them born there. Many of them are immigrants too.The chances of a black person to succeed in society compared to a white man are very small. That is why we find them on streets.I think they have first to declare the same rights, same chances for all citizens and not regarding to the colour of their skins. However we have also white people on streets with same poor education or worse just like black people and not all black people have no education.

The school system and history books have to tell the truth about black history. The early Americans who were considered forefathers are portrayed as rugged individualists and credit them for the declaration of independence, etc. History as it is taught tends to romanticize topics such as "manifest destiny" and "how the west was won," etc. They don't teach that slavery, genocide and stealing land are wrong. Although African studies are now offered in schools, the system is still mainly eurocentric. To make education relevant to blacks, history and all other subjects have to be taught in the right perspective in order for progress on both sides can be realized.

I can go on about the media too who chooses to market mainly rappers and criminals, and ignore the achievements of successful blacks such as executives like CEO of American Express and billionaire owner of Beatrice Foods (he passed away), etc., and middle class blacks. If these successful blacks were given enough attention, they can serve as good role models in their community.

Etc., etc.

If you have a son, read to him every night. Help him with his studies, and encourage him to be whatever he wants. I am not going to lay the blame exclusively on music. But listening to bands that preach that the only thing to become is a criminal deviant isn't going to have a positive influence on any young mans life.

These stupid movies make it look cool to be a drug dealer, and that it is cool to murder people and they can get super rich doing it. Go back to shows like the Cosby show and have two loving successful parents and people who work hard for what they have.

when i think of whites and blacks there are many bad and many good. but i think we need to get rid of black history and black history month especially. teaching them that makes them think some how they are better and they will have stuff handed to them. we need to teach general history theres nothing special about black history over white, hispanic, asian, or whatever yea teach them about slaveory becuase it was history but dont make them feel above anyone else by putting them on a pedistol its over and we all live free and equal in this great country of ours. we need to let it all go theres no one is better or worse than anyong nowadays. no matter what anyone seys
