ok, start with 120
minus 1/4= 30
minus 1/12= 10
minus 1/3= 40
so 30+10+40= 80
so 120-80= 40 that were shipped

120 oranges
-1/4 = 30
-1/12 = 10
-1/3 = 40
minus a total of 30+10+40=80
120 - 80 = 40 were shipped

Answer: 119 and 1/3 oranges were shipped.
Start with 120 oranges.
You gave away 1/4 of an orange, so there are 119 3/4 oranges remaining.
You ate 1/12 of an orange, so there are 119 2/3 oranges remaining.
You gave 1/3 of an orange to friends, so there are 119 1/3 oranges remaining. This is how many were shipped.

x = shipped oranges
(1/4)(120) + (1/12)(120) + (1/3)(120) + x = 120
30 + 10 + 40 + x = 120
x = 40

Ok - Pie chart for anyone prefering the visual approach like moi...
...Divide the pie into 12 equal parts. Shade 1/4 same as 3/12 (3 Oranges given away), shade 1/12 (1 eaten), shade 1/3 same as 4/12 (4 Oranges given to friends).
The remaining amount unshaded (4/12 the same as 1/3 and the same as 4 Oranges) was shipped.
The answer is 4 Oranges (1/3).

Homework eh
well fractions can be tricky
I expect you've heard of common denominators...now's a chance to use them and make this sum really easy
basically you've got to take 1/4 1/12 and 1/3 from the whole thing and see what you have left over.
let's write everything in terms of 12ths, so were dealing with things that are the same
so 1/4 is 3/12
1/12 is 1/12
1/3 that's 4/12
so we've got 3+1+4 12ths
8 12ths alltogether
and we have to take these 8 12ths from the whole, which is of course 12 12ths.
well 12 take 8 is just 4
so whats left is 4/12
4/12 of what we started with 120
so the sum really is 4 x 120/12
12 goes into 120 , 10 times
which leaves 4x10=40
hope that makes sense, a pain free method and no calculators needed

ok! take 1/4*120=30 oranges.
then, 1/12*120=10 oranges.
then, 1/3*120=40 oranges.
after that sum the amount of oranges gaveaway to that which were eaten and which were given to friends( 30+10+40) then you get 80 oganges.
now take the 120 oranges and minus 80 oranges and remain 40 oranges which are equal to the oranges that shipped.
i hope that is the answer for your question!

total = 120
1/4 + 1/12 + 1/3 = 8/12 = 2/3 = amount given/eaten
so 1/3 x 120 = amount shipped = 40

If you find the LCD for those fractions first,
Then you have 3/12, 1/12 and 4/12 to give away
So add 3+1+4 to give the value of 8
So 8/12 given away
120%12 =10
10x8 = 80 given away
120-80 =40 shipped
ps. LCD is Lowest Common Denominator.

c'mon dude - that's so easy.
I'll give you a couple of hints but you have to do your own homework.
You have to divide the 120 by 12 to get 1/12
Divide the 120 by 4 to get 1/4
and divide the 120 by 3 to get 1/3
Minus the sum of those from the 120.
That's how may shipped.
