So is it possible for a human being to be happy if this person does not strive or look towards something other then him/herself?
With self-transcendence I mean love to somebody or something other then oneself, or faith in GOD, or fulfilling a goal or a task which does not concentrate on ones own physical and emotional well-being.

Thanks for your thoughts about that!

Good question... star!!

If you mean the kind of happiness that lasts beyond dependence on favorable events, then it is inevitably based on self transcendence. As long as we are concerned and occupied with self-interest, the events that occur in our lives would always get classified as either favorable to please us or unfavorable to pain us.... and we would keep oscillating between pleasure and pain since events would never be one-sided. More than the actual events, our expectations would always make us anxious lest the coming event should be unfavorable. That can not give us sustained happiness.

Once we transcend self, we would have no anxiety through our expectations and that would give us the necessary platform to achieve lasting happiness.

Suffice to say that in our happiest moments, we forget ourselves...... in fact it is due to forgetting ourselves that we can experience the blissful feeling...... and your examples of profound faith in God or an important goal or task etc. are indeed apt ones for anyone to realize how blissful feeling arises from forgetting oneself.

I guess it would kinda be like being a pool of stagnant water. There needs to be movement, cleansing, expansion . . . I think without personal growth, life would sooooo boring.
