A "voodoo doll" is a small doll intended to be used to affect or influence another person through the power of sympathetic magic. Sympathetic magic is basically the belief that you can cause something to happen to one object by doing something to another object that is somehow associated with the first one. A voodoo doll is meant to represent another person, with the idea that things done to the doll will have a comparable effect on that person.

The use of voodoo dolls is associated with New Orleans voodoo in particular, and is not common in the Caribbean or Africa. The precise origins of the voodoo doll as used in New Orleans voodoo are unclear. They may actually have their roots in Europe, where there is a tradition of using poppets (small dolls or puppets) in an attempt to magically influence others.

If you ever visit New Orleans, you'll see plenty of voodoo dolls for sale as souvenirs. They're available for purchase in many other regions as well -- in recent years voodoo dolls became a fad in China, but were actually banned by the Chinese government in 2006 for promoting superstitious beliefs. Voodoo dolls are also widely available online. However, most practicioners of magic would say that you need to make your own in order to properly focus them on the intended target.

Do I believe in voodoo dolls personally? No, but many people do, at least enough to feel nervous about them. It's best not to play around with this sort of thing, as it is likely to upset others and make trouble for yourself.

Voodoo dolls are used only in the vudun (voodoo) religion, which came from carribean islanders. White witches are basically european in origin, and some practitioners may use something like voodoo dolls, but it's not really the same. You learn a lot when you live in New Orleans for many years!

voodoo dolls are very real, however aquiring one is a totally different matter you do not just make them. Finding a shaman willing to create them for you is very difficult, then the time of the month must be right or you will be waiting a while. Then the victims possesions are harder to come by. And then the hardest part actually using the doll they are almost impossible to use, Myself when training had a very difficul time, even the eldest of the arcane have dificult using them. A lower level spirit is suggested over voodoo because of the backlashes. It is such a crude magic anyways.

Voodoo dolls are seldom used in the practice of Voodoo. Poppets are made usually to help healing someone from a distance or binding a person that intends to cause harm to others. Any other use is a guaranteed slap in the face by karma. You would be better off making one than buying one since the process of making it helps you to instill it with your intent. Once again, you reap what you sow and bad karma comes with a steep price.

I agree the best way to have a poppet is to make it yourself. You will instill the doll with your power and intent. Those are key to having it work.

But remember it must be used to aid or heal, or possibly prevent someone from harming you, but be careful.
Although it is nice to have something of the person it is for is nice it is not always necessary.

However since you will only be using the doll for good, You can ask the person for something personal. That way it has there essence on it. You should only do Magick with the persons permission unless you yourself are in personal danger. But again remember harm none

Or what you send out will come back, so make sure the intent is to harm NONE. in fact it is always a good idea to add those words to any spell. Just in case.

Good luck

The dolls of vodou are actually concentration points for the Magickal operater. Are the dolls Magick, no. Are they able to allow an operater to help or hinder, yes.

I've made a lot of them in different colors.
They become the effigy of someone when you
decide who they'll be and place a spell on that
someone. You can dress them up to look like
the person and add some personal items of the
"victim" such as nail clippings, hair, etc...
I've never had any reason to use mine. They are
very easy to make though.
