Why would there be laws that govern the actual manufacturing of the casket? There aren't any. There are laws that govern the sale of caskets (which, by the way, a casket and a coffin are the same thing), but not the maunufacturing.

Varies by state, if they even have them. More common are laws governing the selling of caskets and coffins. "In a new tack, many states now require anyone who simply sells caskets to the public to become licensed as a funeral director or mortician. Alabama, Delaware, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia all require some type of licensure to sell funeral merchandise.44 Because licensure is time-consuming and costly, this is merely another way of forcing consumers to buy caskets only at funeral homes." However, Tennessee lost a court case that challenged that, so I'm not sure of the status of its law now.
Here's a link to one of the articles on the topic, there are quite a few that discuss the same issue (allegedly there isn't even a law requiring that burials use a casket or coffin!) - http://ij.org/economic_liberty/tennessee_caskets/backgrounder.html

We are a casket retailer, and unless you are making them to sell, anyone can make their own casket. Plans for such are off of our website at
http://www.burialitems.com (for coffins as well, homemade is the key word)
Also, links to the FTC funeral booklet with details on what is allowed or not.
Thanks for asking, Betty B.

Each state has its own code. Ask a local undertaker about state regulatory commission in your state.
