I lived in a very small town once, where the garbage man was a young lady with her 2 kids and a pickup truck. She'd take anything that was in a garbage bag, nothing else. I had a cardboard box that needed to go. I put the bag in the box. She took the bag, left the box. Next time I put the box in the bag, and she took it. There are rules in every community about this, so find out what they are and follow them. Where I live now, anything you set out there goes, but not always with the garbage man. When my house burned, people came along and took an amazing variety of smoked/melted/partially burned things, before the garbage man got here.

I had this problem once.... I even put the old garbage can inside another garbage can. I ended up putting a note on it saying "Please take this trash can." It worked!
