I want to have my carpets cleaned, but i am a bit sceptical about just how effective it is.

Don't use it. It leaves the carpet too wet which can stretch it. It leaves too much chemical residue in the carpet which makes it sticky, then your carpet gets dirty quicker. It is a high sudsing chemical and is not good for your carpet.
Use a professional & get recommendations from family or friends on someone reputable. Only chemicals that are close to a neutral ph are good for overall cleaning. Harsh chemicals should only be used sparingly by professionals on stubborn stains and thoroughly flushed out.
As someone who has had to clean out the residue left by these machines please take my advice. Your carpets are expensive to buy or replace, don't scrimp on cheap cleaning. A professional clean every year or two will keep your carpets looking good for many years and save you a lot more money in the long run.

Stay away from Rug Doctor and all steam cleaning machines. this type of cleaning method can leave under your carpet very wet which will produce mold. You think you are extracting all the water out, but can't see what is left underneath. Look in your yellow pages and see if the company "Chem Dry" is in your area. They are by far the best and recommended by carpet professionals.. It may be more expensive to have a professional clean your rugs, but by using steam clean methods, it will ruin your carpet and will cost you much more to replace the rug vs paying a reputable company to clean them.

If you want a professional job have Stanley Steamer do it. If you want to clean the carpet on a tight budget the Rug Doctor will clean it ok but it is alot of work filling the water tank and dumping it, it took me two days to do one large room.

i did and it worked great, of course, as the carpets became dirty again - the old spots came back, so maybe they were never really gone... maybe the carpet wasn't really clean... heck, i think i got screwed
