AMERICANS ARE LAZY! no one here sees driving as a hobby, they only see it as a chore so auto transmission make that chore a little bit easier. its sad really, we don't have top gear to encourage us to drive for fun.
i drive a stick and i would only drive an auto if i had to.

Well the American think that they have to deal with more traffic well they should see wht downtown london looks like on a busy weekday and here everything worlks manual or auto but most of the American Cars I've seen have Auto Except the Sportscar like the Vette or the GTO but there annoying SUV's are all Automatic like the Hummer and The Escaaaalaaaade.

The automatic transmission has become commonplace. It is so much easier to just put it in drive and go. You don't have to worry about anything. Just sip your morning coffee on the way to work.
The truth is, there are so many people that can't drive a shift transmission. They never had the chance to learn. I have known of people buying a stick shift car and then trying to learn with their new car.
Good luck.

It's too hard for most of us Americans to shift gears and talk on the cell phone, watch a DVD, smoke, eat a taco and 20 other things at the same time. I think people that get that bored while driving should take the bus!

I don't think they are unpopular here. I think they are as popular as an automatic, but neither are more popular than the other.
Here in America, neither a manual nor an automatic are considered rare. Both are popular.

Personally, I drive a stick but to answer the question, automatics are so sophisticated nowdays that but for the sheer thrill of stirring your own gears it's really more practical to drive an auto. Our cars are WAY bigger and we drive in much more traffic.
Cheerio!

Because driving in traffic is bad enough with having to deal with your cell phone in one hand and a cup of coffee between your legs. And either shaving on the way to work or worse yet women putting on their makeup. Imagine having to deal with a clutch pedal, and a stick shifter thingy.

I bought a stick-shift recently and sometimes I don't know why...too much traffic...Then on the other hand you can experiment and accelerate faster..It is a lot more exciting...and of course you need a lot more concentration on the road...no cell phone, that's for sure!

truthfully a lot of people here cant drive them, they never learned to drive a stick shift, and that's the main reason why, that and a lot of us are getting lazy,i think, most of it though is people learn to drive in an automatic, and that's all they want to drive, stick shifts are getting more popular here though than they was ten years ago, there more of them on the road now, good luck with it.

Because out here we get tired of changing gears every other sec. Like in traffic or on the highway. Also not a lot of people are to coordinated to handle it
