We are driving from Boston to Portsmouth,NH. We want to take as much of the coast up as possible and stop at a beach or two along the way. Any suggestions for best beaches around Gloucester. (Any with a good collection of seashells would be great) Or other ideas? Trip is within the next 2 weeks and traveling with 6&4 year old.

Wingarsheek beach in Gloucester is my favorite, lots of rocks.
Crane beach in Ipswich is nice. You can visit castle there.
Salisbury state park in Salisbury has a nice beach.
Hampton beach in NH has lots of shops and a nice beach too.
Rye beach in Rye, NH also nice.

I grew up in Swampscott which is right next to Marblehead and is also loaded with beaches. If you go to Marblehead, I recommend Deveraux Beach. Here is a link to the beach as well as directions. Also, this site has descriptions of beaches up and down the shore. IMy family in Boston still goes to Deveraux Beach. It may costs you to park but it is worth it. There is a playground for the kids and a nice snack bar for lunch and snacks.

After the beach take a drive around the Marblehead Neck (Deveraux is on the neck) just continue up the causeway past the beach and you will see some huge houses. Half way to three quarters of the way around you will see a lighthouse which is also a lookout point. Get out the view is amazing!

After that you can take a short drive down Atlantic Ave to Old Downtown and Old Town Marblehead. Both have shops (more art type stuff) but nice to walk around and maybe get an ice cream or something. In Old Town there Fort Sewell which was used to the Revoultionary War. It is not all that much, but it is also am amazing view.

Salem is not so much known for its beaches. There is a very small amusement park Salem Willows. It is somewhat run down, but if you want to give your kids a treat of some video games it will take up an hour or so of your time. It is also right on Salem Harbor so you can look out and see some really nice views. There is also the Salem Witch House and Museum as well as the Peabody Essex Musuem.

Gloucester is close to Rockport which is also very nice to walk around. Again a lot of art but a nice day.
