I need something to eat algae in my 1 gallon bowl with about 10 fry. Will a snail be ok, and what kind of snail? I don't really want a snail because it can crwal right out of the bowl. Will a shrimp work? What kind? Any other ideas?

Most snails will not leave the water except just out of the edge to lay eggs, but that's not the real concern. 10 guppy fry will not last long in a 1 gallon bowl and the algae will help some with water quality, so just leave it. I would suggest you get them into something that holds 10 gallons or so asap. They need a filtered environment to live and grow.

Above is a picture of an otocinclus catfish. It is a small (2") algae-eating fish which is perfect for the tropical freshwater aquarium. It is a diligent worker, doesn't have an aggressive bone in its body, and is fun to watch interact with others in a group. Other names for otocinclus are "otos", or "dwarf suckermouth catfish".

The picture above is of a nice fat female, if you click on the picture and look carefully you can actually see an egg or two right near its left ventral fin. I guess I came close to breeding these fish when the picture was taken but I never saw any fry. I hope that will change with my recent stock.

Also notice the nice green poop. Otocinclus should be constantly pooping. In fact, most fish from the family Loricariidae are big poopers. Since otocinclus are mainly herbivores they need massive quantities of greens to keep them healthy. The best form of this is the soft green algae that is sometimes difficult to see. A fat oto is a happy oto! If your oto is slim in any sense of the word then you need to supplement their diet with zucchini or spinach, or figure out a way to grow more algae!

A shrimp will probably eat the fry. If you are getting algae in your bowl, it is because you are not cleaning it enough. Don't make an animal do your job. It won't live long.

Your best bet is to just clean the bowl. Use a small amount of Vinegar with warm tap water this will clear away the algae. Just make sure you rinse the hell out of it. Once a week will do fine. If you go to a bigger tank stick with sucker fish they work the best and are fairly in expensive.
