That ia an old belief which is not true. Though its name derived from such belief (Old English eare "ear" and wicga "insect".) There was a notion that earwigs burrow into the brains of humans through the ear and therein lay their eggs. This belief, however, is completely false, as it would be impossible for an insect to eat through the human skull in its lifetime. While earwigs can be considered in some ways a beneficial part of the garden, they can become a nuisance because of their diet.

Not stupid at all - there are all sorts of myths and legends about everyday things. It's always good to be a little skeptical! So, anyway, earwigs don't do any of that silly stuff - they lay eggs just like most other insects: trying to find the safest place possible where there is the best chance the young will survive (under bark or rocks, for instance). There are very few animals that would do something as risky as lay eggs in or on mammals, let alone people. Earwigs don't.

Earwigs are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food. They will eat live or dead insects as well as live or decaying vegetation. Earwigs can cause damage to cultivated plants. They can be a nuisance when they migrate indoors. Migrations of earwigs numbering in the 100's have been reported. They seldom become established indoors. Some species will emit a foul odor. Earwigs can be of value as predators of certain insect pests. The name originates from the superstition that earwigs crawl into the ears of sleeping persons and bore into the brain. Although earwigs appear somewhat dangerous due to their forceps, they are practically harmless to man.

No bug could get to a living humans brain. If it did that would hurt! They pinch. As far as I know they have no venom and its like an ant bite without the venom. I've only been pinched once and it was just a quick pinch it didnt leave a mark or anything.
