Jack Dempseys need a fairly large tank - say at the minimum a 29 gallon tank. But a 50 gallon would be preferable. Why? Well, with enough room to grow, clean monitored water and enough food - including live food (feeder fish), they'll grow extremely FAST.

If you keep them in a small tank, their environment will make their growth hormones shut off and they won't grow much at all.

So big tank + good diet + clean, healthy water = lots of growth

Small tank + poor diet + poor, unhealthy water = little growth.

Good luck,

Ken

JD's do not grow like Oscars - they grow quite a bit slower. While An Oscar will reach 4" in a couple of months, for a JD you are looking at half a year or so. Of course, growth has much to do with the fishes environment and diet too.

With proper conditions well under a year. Plenty of space, clean water and a steady proper diet are the key to steady, healthy growth.

they grow like oscars and they should reach four inches in 2-4 months and if they dont then they might be in too small of a tank and be stunted.

less than a year if you feed it correctly and have enough room for it to grow.

depending on how big it was when you got it, probably like 2 months.
