I was ridiculous, and hid my period from my mom for a good 4 or 5 months!! I was scared, because I got it pretty early (I was 11) and I was too embarassed to say anything. When she finally found out, she was actually really mad at me for hiding it from her. I think her feelings were hurt. Im pregnant with a little girl now, 13 years later...and I sure hope she feels close enough with me to tell me the moment it happens. Thats a very exciting part of a girls life!!

Something along the lines of you are becoming a woman and then proceeded to tell the rest of the females in the family. How embarassing. I was all of 11 the biggest tom boy around and within the space of a month I ended up with training bras and my period. I wanted to crawl under a rock and die.

Not much. This was 1957. My mother never said anything to me about sex or periods. I saw a film at school in the 4th grade and that is all I knew. I was 14.

My mother never knew until the nurse told her... I broke my leg at the same time and the nurse said do you know that you are on your period and looked at me and my mother, Then I started to cry and my mother said I will always remember that you cried when you first had your period.

Reading these answers saddens me! My mother was the same way, embarrassed to talk about periods, sex, shaving etc! The time to cultivate a relationship is BEFORE puberty hits. Why should we feel ashamed of what naturally is happening to our bodies? Moms out there---be open with your daughters! Let them know way ahead of time what is going to happen with their bodies, then when they are teenagers they won't be so apt to turn away because of a lack of closeness. Your mother was wrong to say "it's about time". You are neither late nor early but EXACTLY right for your body!

Well, I don't remember exactly what she said, but she was happy about it. Now I, on the other hand, was devistated by it! It came the month before I turned 10, and I wanted absolutely no part of it. I started crying and was miserable. My mom let me make homemade tollhouse cookies with her for the occation/to take my mind off of it. Thats helped for a few hours.

I don't remember exactly what she said, but I do remember her giving me some ibuprofen and industrial size pads. I just remember being so scared of leaking that I used those huge pads for a long time, and wouldn't use thin ones. My mom think tampons are evil, so I didn't start using them for a while either.

I think she smiled and laughed like she was excited, and then told all the females in the family and laughed more and more...she made fun of me because I told her I felt like vomiting when I saw blood on my panties...it was funny!...LOL.
Actually, I was in Florida on vacation at my grandma's house. My dad was with his gf (my parents are divorced) and my mom back in my country so the first one to find out was my grandma (my dad's mom). She told my dad right away and my dad asked me...and then I asked him how he knew and he told me my grandma told him. I was only 11 yrs old and I was so scared of saying anything...I'm still wondering how my grandma found out...HMMMM...I asked her but she said, she just knew!...yeah whatever...and then she said that I was already a woman and to ALWAYS OPEN MY EYES AND CLOSE MY LEGS. ha ha ha...I'm pregnant after 10 yrs she told me that...so I think I did a pretty good job at listening to her. LOL.

She smiled, hugged me, and said nothing. Later that night she took me out to dinner and we stayed at the restaurant till 1:30 am, chatting about the "situation " :) and other things that she always wanted to tell me. She said it was a time for her, and her little lady. I was 14 yrs old then and 26 now.

I was feeling light headed and could not figure out why I had dried chocolate like stains in my pants. LOL
She said oh that's nothing just your period, sometimes you get it once and it does not come back regularly until you are older.. My sister overheard and said she can't have her period I just got mine this year. That's not fair! To my sisters dismay it returned every month.
