I have a 2006 Honda Civic. There is a 30% oil life display. What does this mean, and how do I fix it? Thanks so much!

Honda has a very sophisticated system to judge how the vehicle is being driven and how that impacts the useful life of the oil. Honda is an environmentally concerned (green) company and they believe that our resources are being used inappropriately by changing oil more often than is necessary. Everyone, including myself, will take issue with that position, but essentially Honda calculates the vehicle speed, engine load and temperature variables that affect oil life and results in their prediction of how long the engine oil has remaining in its useful life. That 30% oil life indicator means that of the initial 100% of useful life, you have 30% remaining. Honda recommends changing the oil when that useful life is at 15% or less.

Honda no longer publishes oil change intervals in miles. How you drive the vehicle will determine how many miles constitute the remaining 15% of the useful life between now and when you will need to change your oil.

The maintenance minder system hasn't been around long enough to tell if this monitored system will prove detrimental in the long run. On my 2005 Civic, the oil change intervals were every 5000 miles for mixed city and highway driving. I wouldn't have any hesitation in saying that is a very good recommended interval to change you oil if you don't have the confidence in the maintenance minder system.

as far as 'fixing' the 30%, you (or the dealer) can reset the maintance minder when you change the oil. I think the instructions on how to do that are in your owner's manual

hope that answers your question.

That just means that according to your current mileage since your last oil change you have 30% of the oils viscosity life left before your next oil change is due. There will be a reset procedure in your owners manual to reset it to 100% but most places that change oil can do it for you when its time.
