We have had good luck with the light plastic bird netting. You have to make sure that the plant doesn't grow threw it. That means moving it once in a while. Most animals don't like to get near the stuff. I don't either but it does save the plants.

I have found that fencing is the only effective method for keeping out larger animals like deer. The liquid fence type stuff, hot pepper spray, etc works but has to be re-applied often.

Ok, the thing you have to do is hang plain Cd's from the plant. When the squirrels look at their reflection they get frightened and they run away. (not eating anything). And the CD's are stylish.
