My choices for best soundtrack (not musicals):

Breakfast at Tiffanys

Is anyone else annoyed with movies which use top 40 hits as a soundtrack? Composing music for movies is an art form, some of the greats like John Williams and Henry Mancini were true masters. Nowadays, any random selection of pop hits can cheapen the experience of going to the movies. What do you think?

that's an awesome question! i love danny elfman.. from edward scissorhands and hans zimmer for the movie gladiator. both of them make good soundtracks.. but i guess my favorite is, "shape of my heart" by sting from the movie Leon The professional. i love a good soundtrack.

and oh yea.. they prefer the top 40 hits so that if the band playing is popular, music lovers might want to dig in to the movie. whatever sells is good for them.

Then, of course, there's "The Wall" by Pink Floyd, where the soundtrack WAS the movie.

"The Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles, too.

Both excellent.

For instrumentals, "Star Wars" was extremely innovative, and "Jurassic Park" is excellent. "2001, A Space Odyssey" was a milestone for film and music, using classical music the way modern films use pop music.

You really want to leave musicals out of the running? There are so many good ones.

Also... I think a lot of top 40 hits don't really become the hits that they are until AFTER they are featured in a movie, or on TV.

A lot of more recent films are going with the trend of having a score and a separate soundtrack (capitalism at its finest). I tend to prefer the scores, especially works by Danny Elfman, Clint Mansell, and John Williams. However, I can not resist some of the soundtracks that put snips of the movie dialogue between tracks (American Psycho, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk Till Dawn, etc).

A good soundtrack..... that's a toughy.
As much as I am so over and dislike Remember the Titans, the music is sort of bomb. Just like the overall feel good, happy music. Cameron Crowe movies especially have aweeesome music.

Tex...You must have been watching CMT lately. They have shown both movies this past month! LOL I asked myself the same question the other night after Urban Cowboy was on. I agree with you, they are the Best Soundtracks ever, not just Country. I love Pure Country and Urban Cowboy, to me the music made the movies.

Pulp Fiction, Ghost World, Pink Flamingos are some of my favorites.
I agree that it takes a intelligent person to make a soundtrack. Quinten Tarintino and Sofia Copella (excuse my spelling mistakes if any) always pick some good stuff.

The disney movie soundtracks[old ones now disney is about computer animation and other stupid crap]. I agree, but some movies really are enriched by songs that are on the airwaves...not always though. I think movies...in general just ain't what they used to be:]
